Hello I would like to cut and make my first stick, would anyone be able to tell me what type of wood I could find on wimbledon common? Also it appears from readin forum that I should only cut sticks in the winter time is this correct? I have a lot to learn, infact I know nothing of stick making, but finding a stick is my first problem. Will I have to wait a longtime for it to season?

Hi Everybody

Viktur here.

I wonder how many of the forum members use a face mask filter. You know the cheap pressed paper type with a soft metal clip across the nose. I use one all the time when carving and using the foredom. However I have one major problem with these masks, my glasses steam up, and you will know there is nothing more annoying than having to stop work to remedy a problem which must be avoidable.

I have tried various methods of using these masks. I have padded the ...

Hi all, id like to start cutting my own blanks from blocks of timber. I have tryed several times without much succes they end up taking a long time to work to shape.

One thing I soon relised is it's probably best to buy blocks of timber at the desired thickness of the handle that I require. I was using off cut blocks of sapele I scrounged from a local timber merchant, it's worth a try by the way.

I have an axminster bandsaw model SBW3501B which I find does most jobs I require it to, but ...

Hi Guys

Viktur here.

I think every stick maker should try and sell his or her sticks at some time. Selling your first stick is a real buzz, selling your second stick is even better, and when you continue being able to sell them you know you must be doing something right.

Just have a look on the internet. There are a lot of stick makers/dressers out there with web sites, and its not difficult to do.

If you have Orange as a web provider they used to provide you with your own web space ...

It's generally agreed that in the UK we only cut sticks in the winter - I've even seen it written that we can ONLY cut sticks in December, January and February! Quite what will happen to us or the sticks if we cut outside these months is never actually stated.

I normally cut a few in October and finish in early April, with the bulk cut in February and March. Mine are mostly cut in woods managed for gamebirds and the shooting season finishes on February 1st so I can cut more freely after that.

It's difficult for THEM to obtain them though, because of the hygiene regulations in force and which are often misunderstood by the abattoir staff. There ARE legal ways of getting them but the rules make it difficult!

I try to adhere to that principle but I make an exception with ash, which I consider pretty boring to look at. I therefore strip off the bark. I can then get an attractive finish with my favourite stain, potassium permanganate.

I’ve experimented with various stripping methods. Recently I “accidentally” came across another method that worked very well indeed. I was taking a break from weeding the garden and idly ...

Hello,

I'm originally from the north of England, but I've spent the past 40 years working abroad, since 1980 in the far south of the Netherlands. I make the odd stick now and again “for the fun of it". It's satisfying to occasionally make something with my hands rather than just with my head! (I'm a translator by profession.) My sticks are mostly long ones (often thumbsticks) for use while fellwalking (that's the British term for what Americans would call "rough country hiking".)

I've worked with wood since I was 5 years old so that means I've been making sawdust or chips for nearly 56 years. I'm now retired from the mundane postal worker job that I held for 32 years. Have been building furniture and repairing same on the side for over 30years. Recent interest in canes started when I was asked to repair two antique canes. Started reading up on the making and collecting of old and new sticks ...

I also use bought-in Spanish chestnut which doesn't really grow round here - though there are places in southern England where it does grow well.

I'm Lesley, retired and living in Bedfordshire (at the moment).

I'm firstly a pyrographer, but also a carver. I decorated a stick with pyrography a couple of years ago and thought I'd like to have a go at stickmaking. I've bought several blanks but still haven't done anything with them - I will eventually.

Thanks for the invite, Keith
