Acid etching

Post  Charlie on Wed Apr 30, 2008 6:52 am

I have an interest in old canes and have been reading several books on collecting and manufacturing of such. In 'CANES THROUGH THE AGES' by Francis H. Monek I note reference to acid etching of ebony to give an interesting design to shafts, and would be greatful if anyone in the forum has any knowledge of the process. I'm interested in the acid used and timing of exposure etc. My concern is the fact that the wood has a grain and that any acid would be difficult to control in it's effect on the wood ie. saturation under the wax as used in etching such as on metal or glass. Hate to ruin expensive ebony in experimentation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Charlie
