Hello I'm Russ, Living in the wimbldon area, I would like to make my first walking stick from scratch. If anyone knows what sort of wood I could use and find on wimbledon common please let me know.

Hello Russ.
The best time to get sticks is between October and March this is when the sap is at its lowest , if you got one now it would be very wet with sap plus you have to leave them for one full year .The best sticks to find are Hazel because of there flexibility also Ash, a very strong wood looks very attractive with the bark off Ash looks grey and is normally straight, Hawthorne this is also attractive with the bark on Blackthorn very rare to find . So get your sticks between Oct/March leave them for one year in bundels of 5 or 10 in a COOL place ie a shed while the sticks are seasoning you nead a drill 8mm bit 8mm threaded rod Eposy resin and a lot of time i hope this will help you Derek STICK -AT-IT
