wimbledon common

Post  russhanson on Sat May 03, 2008 11:10 pm

Hello I would like to cut and make my first stick, would anyone be able to tell me what type of wood I could find on wimbledon common? Also it appears from readin forum that I should only cut sticks in the winter time is this correct? I have a lot to learn, infact I know nothing of stick making, but finding a stick is my first problem. Will I have to wait a longtime for it to season?

Thanks
Russ

Hi.

The usual time for cutting staves is in the autumn or winter, when the sap has stopped rising. However, general lore is that you cut 'em when you see 'em - otherwise someone else will !!

I'm not familiar with Wimbledon Common, but you'll probably find Hazel (a commonly used wood for stick staves), maybe Ash, Wild Rose and Elder. All can be used, although because of the large pith centre, Elder is not generally used. It does make a nice light stick, and the wood underneath the corky bark is a nice creamy colour.

Don't forget, you should ask the landowner for permission to cut sticks.
